《Slide 15.》Cervical erosion with squamous metaplasia , Uterine cervix
A. Brief Descriptions:
Squamous metaplasia is defined by replacement of mucin-secreting columnar epithelium by stratified squamous epithelium.
Cause: local ( vaginal ) environmental factors, trauma, chronic irritation, cervical infection.
B. Gross Findings:
When viewed with naked eye, the endocervical mucosa appears as a red, velvety zone, sharply contrasting with the neighboring pink, translucent squamous epithelium.
C. Micro Findings:
Squamous epithelial cells growth under the columnar endocervical mucosa, then the columnar cells degenerate and sloughed.
Cystic dilation of endocervical glands known as Nabothian cysts.
D. Others:
