Slide 16.Aspiration pneumonia,Lung

A. Brief Descriptions

  1. Cause: the inhalation of gastric contents or infected material from the oropharyngeal region.

B. Gross Findings

  1. A putrefactive pneumonia causing ill-defined brownish-yellow areas of softening in the lung, and necrotic slimy contents in the centers with malodor.

C. Micro Findings

  1. Acute inflammatory cells & eosinophilic amorphous exudate in the bronchioles &alveolar space.

  2. Foamy cells (lipid-laden macrophages) or foreign body giant cells.

  3. Thickening alveolar septum due to edema & inflammation.

D. Others:

  1. Pneumonia following the inhalation of gastric contents or infected material from the oro-pharyngeal region, e.g. during anesthesia, coma, seizure....

  2. Wide spread bronchopneumonia frequently associated with necrosis of lung tissue &abscess formation, the inspired material predisposed to the formation of a granuloma with giant cell reaction subsequently.
