Slide 35.Neurilemmoma, Soft tissue

A. Brief Descriptions

  1. Also called Schwannoma.

  2. Arise from the neural crest-derived Schwann cell and are associated with neurofibromatosis type 2

  3. Symptoms are referable to local compression of the involved nerve.

B. Gross Findings

Encapsulated mass, with flattened original nerve in the periphery along the capsule, not penetrating

C. Micro Findings

  1. Antoni A areas: cellular spindle cells with indistinct cytoplasm which are arranged in intersecting bundles.

    • Verocay’s body: nuclei arranged in palisades around eosinophilic areas towards which the fibrillar cytoplasmic processes are oriented (like tactile corpuscles).

  2. Antoni B areas: abundant edematous stroma with microcystic formation & loosely distributed cells.

D. Others:

  1. Benign, common in flexor surface of extremity, mediastinum, neck, retroperitoneum, posterior spinal roots, & cerebello-pontine angle

  2. What is the most common site in cranial vault ? the CN8.
