《Slide 35.》Neurilemmoma, Soft tissue
A. Brief Descriptions:
Also called Schwannoma.
Arise from the neural crest-derived Schwann cell and are associated with neurofibromatosis type 2
Symptoms are referable to local compression of the involved nerve.
B. Gross Findings:
Encapsulated mass, with flattened original nerve in the periphery along the capsule, not penetrating
C. Micro Findings:
Antoni A areas: cellular spindle cells with indistinct cytoplasm which are arranged in intersecting bundles.
Verocay’s body: nuclei arranged in palisades around eosinophilic areas towards which the fibrillar cytoplasmic processes are oriented (like tactile corpuscles).
Antoni B areas: abundant edematous stroma with microcystic formation & loosely distributed cells.
D. Others:
Benign, common in flexor surface of extremity, mediastinum, neck, retroperitoneum, posterior spinal roots, & cerebello-pontine angle
