A. Brief Descriptions

  1. Arbovirus, animal host and mosquito vectors.

B. Gross Findings

  1. Acute cases: only congestion and swelling of the brain.

  2. Chronic cases: areas of cerebral softening and deposition of mineral within brain.

C. Micro Findings

  1.   Perivascular cuffing and parenchymal inflammatory infiltrates.

  2.   Inflammatory nodules.

D. Others:

  1. Meningoencephalitis: parenchyma的感染,不過常伴隨有腦膜的發炎。

  2. Mosquito vectors: Culex pipiens、Culex tritaeniorhynchus、other Culex spp.、Aedes vexans、Anopheles spp.

  3. Reservoir animals: snake、swan、horses、birds.

  4. Incubation peroid: 6~16 days.

  5. Mortality: 50% in infants and child。7%~ 33% in adults.

  6. Morbidity: persistent neurologic disability in survivors.
