A. Brief Descriptions

  1. Cause : imbalance between the mucosal defense mechanisms and the damaging forces (gastric acid & pepsin ; H. pylori ).

  2. Definition : a breach in the mucosa of the alimentary tract.

B. Gross Findings

  1. Sharply demarcated ulcer edges with granulation tissue in ulcer base.

C. Micro Findings

  1. The ulcer extend at least into the submucosa & often into the muscularis propria.

  2. Ulcer crater with inflamed, degenerated & regenerated mucosa at the edge.
