Slide 32.Adrenocortical adenoma, Adrenal gland

A. Brief Descriptions

  1. Benign .

  2. Tumors removed from patients with Cushing syndrome usually weigh less than 50g and measure 3 to 4 cm in diameter.

  3. In broad terms, the majority of adrenal cortical adenomas occur in adults with a slight predilection for females.

B. Gross Findings

Well-circumscribed nodular masses (Usually < 5 cm. In diameter and 5-50 gm. In weight).

C. Micro Findings

  1. Adenomas are composed of uniform large cells arranged in nests and trabeculae.

  2. The cells have abundant lipid-filled cytoplasm and small uniform nuclei.

  3. Nuclear enlargement and pleomorphism are common, but mitotic figures are rare.
