A. Brief Descriptions

  1. The most common tumors in women and are referred to in colloquial usage as fibroids

  2. Estrogen responsive; they regress or even calcify after castration or menopause and may undergo rapid increase in size during pregnancy

  3. Cause: unknown

B. Gross Findings

  1. Solitary or multiple

  2. Circumscribed, firm, grayish-white

  3. On cut section: whirled appearance

C. Micro Findings

  1. Uniform proliferation of spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells with bilateral blunt end (cigar-shaped) nuclei

  2. Cytological atypia is sometimes present, particularly in areas of hyalinization

  3. Degenerative change (not in our slide)
