A. Brief Descriptions:
The most common tumors in women and are referred to in colloquial usage as fibroids
Estrogen responsive; they regress or even calcify after castration or menopause and may undergo rapid increase in size during pregnancy
Cause: unknown
B. Gross Findings:
Solitary or multiple
Circumscribed, firm, grayish-white
On cut section: whirled appearance
C. Micro Findings:
Uniform proliferation of spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells with bilateral blunt end (cigar-shaped) nuclei
Cytological atypia is sometimes present, particularly in areas of hyalinization
Degenerative change (not in our slide)
Red degeneration (necrobiosis)
Cystic degeneration
Hyalinization
Calcification
