Slide 37.Warthin's tumor, Parotid gland

A. Brief Descriptions

  1. Benign; also called papillary cystadenoma lymophomatosum.

  2. Arises almost always in the parotid gland and occurs more commonly in males than in females, usually in the fifth to seventh decades of life.

  3. Smokers have eight times the risk of nonsmoker for developing tumors.

B. Gross Findings

     Ovoid tumor with a smooth surface, multicystic lesion with gray to tan solid portion.

C. Micro Findings

  1. Prominent lymphoid stroma with germinal centers.

  2. Covering the surface of this lymphoid tissue are large double-layered epithelial cells.

D. Others:

     5-10% parotid tumor, rare in other salivary glands multicentric, bilateral(in 10-15%), slow growth.
