A. Brief Descriptions:

  1. Definition: presence of endometrial glands or stroma in abnormal locations outside the uterus.

  2. Sites (in desecnding order of frequency): ovaries, uterine ligaments, rectovaginal septum, pelvic peritoneum, laparotomy scars, rarely in the umbilicus, vagina, vulva, or appendix

  3. Symptoms and signs: infertility, dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, and other problems.

B. Gross Findings:

  1. "Chocolate cysts" : a moderately thin-walled cyst containing dark purple-brown, semisolid, sticky material.

C. Micro Findings

   Two of the three following features:

  1. Endometrial glands.

  2. Endometrial stroma.

  3. Old hemorrhage with hemosiderin-laden macrophage.
