Slide 67.Adenocarcinoma (early gastric cancer), Stomach

A. Brief Descriptions

  1. A carcinoma limited to the mucosa or to the mucosa and submucosa only, irrespective of whether or not metastasis to lymph nodes has occurred.

  2. Two groups: intramucosal and submucosal.

  3. Not synonymous with carcinoma in situ.

B. Gross Findings

  1. In early gastric carcinoma, tumor in confined to the mucosa and submucosa and may exhibit an exophytic, flat or depressed, or excavated conformation.

C. Micro Findings

  1. In low power, there is an ulcer with regeneration.

  2. Neoplastic glands in the edge of the ulcer with fibrinopurulent exudate and necrotic debris in the ulcer base.

  3. Cancer cells in the edge of the ulcer with irregular arrangement and hyperchromatism.
